Who is suing, and where
Survivors, businesses and insurance companies that paid fire claims have sued Southern California Edison (SCE) and its parent company, Edison International. The cases are being handled together in Los Angeles Superior Court under the lead case Gursey v. Southern California Edison, No. 25STCV00731, before Judge Laura A. Seigle.
What investigators concluded
A joint report released in August 2026 by CAL FIRE and the Los Angeles County Fire Department concluded the fire was caused by electrical arcing on an out-of-service SCE transmission tower in Eaton Canyon. That is an investigators’ finding, not a court ruling on liability.
What the court has decided so far
- August 2026: the judge tentatively declined insurers’ request to hold SCE liable under inverse condemnation without a trial.
- September 22, 2026: the judge denied Edison International’s request to be dismissed from the cases, so the parent company remains a defendant.
- Late October 2026: the judge refused SCE’s request to rule out inverse condemnation. Whether it applies will be decided at trial. Read about that ruling →
None of these rulings is a finding that Edison is liable. Edison has said it disagrees with the October ruling.
The first trial
The first trial, involving a small group of test (“bellwether”) cases, is scheduled to begin January 25, 2027, according to reports as of late October 2026. Bellwether trials help both sides see how juries respond, which can shape settlements in the other cases. Trial dates can change.
Claims in the lawsuits
Eaton Fire lawsuits against SCE commonly include inverse condemnation (for property damage), negligence, trespass, nuisance, and violations of California’s Public Utilities Code and Health and Safety Code. Which claims fit your case depends on your losses.
